This is a program sponsored by the California Department of Fish and Game to
promote understanding of the environment. The club places aquaria equipped with
filters and chillers to maintain trout friendly temperatures in four local classrooms
in Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley. They are stocked with trout eggs obtained from the
DF&G. Students care for the fish, learning about the life cycle of the fish and
the necessity for a favorable environment in which to survive.
About 75-100 rainbow trout eggs per classroom are obtained from the hatchery. If all
goes well about 75% survive to be released. For the first three weeks or so they live on
the food in their egg sac, after that high protein food from the hatchery is used.
The classes go on a field trip to release the trout in local waters - typically Piru
Creek or Lake Casitas. With steelhead being protected any waters where steelhead
might be present are off limits for releases - basically any water with unrestricted flow
to the ocean.

Trout in the Classroom project.
