Wednesday June 12, 2013 Meeting David Wratchford has been fly fishing since the age of 12, growing up on Long island in New York; most of his early ventures were in the saltwater and some small ponds nearby. While he moved to California in January of 2000 to work as a horse trainer it took him a while to find out where to go with a fly rod. He started out where most people go the areas around Bishop and Mammoth. It helped that during that time he also worked as a packer leading groups into the Sierra backcountry. Once he started looking closer to home and discovered the high carp populations of the L.A. River and the local lakes it didn’t take him long to realize what a worthy adversary carp make to the fly fisher. David is now an extremely dedicated carp angler, guiding for carp in addition to local surf and striped bass trips. He is also a member of the pro staff for USCarpPro Magazine and last year won the Lake Henshaw Carp Throwdown in the wading division and also finished the day with the most fish of any angler across the field and missed the big fish award by a mere half an inch! Across the country carp are finally starting to get the credit they deserve. In fact if you ask many trout guides what they fish for on their days off the answer you’ll most likely get is carp! Join David as he discusses the different types of situations where you are liable to find active carp and get your best shot at catching them on everything from nymphs to streamers and yes, even dry flies! Come out and learn where carp are, how they eat and the best ways to target them in our local waters. In addition, David will have just finished competing for a second time at the Lake Henshaw Carp Throwdown and should have a great story or two about that.
